WDSD and Crazy Socks
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed annually on March 21st to raise awareness and promote inclusion for people with Down syndrome. The date (3/21) symbolizes the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome.
Crazy Socks
The Crazy Socks Campaign is a fun and meaningful way to show support on WDSD. People wear mismatched, colorful, or crazy socks to start conversations and raise awareness about Down syndrome.
Why Socks?
• Under a microscope, chromosomes resemble pairs of socks. Since individuals with Down syndrome have an extra 21st chromosome, wearing mismatched socks represents the uniqueness of people with Down syndrome.
• The bright and fun socks encourage people to ask, “Why are you wearing those?”—creating an opportunity to educate others about inclusion and acceptance.
How to Participate
1. Wear crazy, mismatched, or brightly colored socks on March 21st.
2. Share on social media using hashtags like #LotsOfSocks and #WorldDownSyndromeDay.
3. Educate and advocate by starting conversations about Down syndrome and inclusion.
4. Support organizations that work with individuals with Down syndrome.
